What will I do with this little still life,<\/p>\n

the empty cereal plate, floral pattern<\/p>\n

jug of milk and plain butter croissant<\/p>\n

on the tablecloth retaining its folds,<\/p>\n

shaken that morning from the hot press,<\/p>\n

and poppyseed cake on a green dish,<\/p>\n

finely glazed Zsolnay it looks like,<\/p>\n

waiting to be bitten into, dense<\/p>\n

and dark with a million poppy seeds<\/p>\n

scattering all over the dining room<\/p>\n

if I\u2019m not careful, a bentwood chair<\/p>\n

foreshortened against a lilac wall<\/p>\n

on which a crucifixion scene hangs<\/p>\n

and two other prints off to the side,<\/p>\n

Hungarian light in the empty glass<\/p>\n

reflecting a window where the Puszta<\/p>\n

stretches all the way to the Carpathians,<\/p>\n

or reflecting nothing, a painter\u2019s whim,<\/p>\n

his desire to bring light to the subject,<\/p>\n

to have us notice his eye for things<\/p>\n

that day in 1910 in the dining room?<\/p>\n
